Quantitative Magnetic Resonance (QMR)
Introduction
Body Fat versus Lean Mass can be measured by QMR which quantifies tissue mass by measuring nuclear magnetic resonance signals (voltage) proportional to total number of hydrogen nuclei, their relaxations times, and diffusion coefficients. The QMR instrument manufactured by Echo medical Systems, Houston, Texas, is a non-invasive means to measure body composition in a conscious mouse. The mouse is placed in a sample holder and then inserted into the center of the magnetic resonance machine. A single measurement takes 2 minutes. A mouse is subjected to 3 to 5 replicate measurements during a typical experiment. The metrics include body mass, percent lean body mass, percent fat mass, and bone mass.
